CMDA Project Description

The Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA) region has been dotted with many lakes out of which the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) and Tamil Nadu Water Resource Department (WRD) have identified 10 lakes that offer a unique opportunity to conserve and create significant public spaces.

The following lakes have been selected for the competition is provided below.

  • Perumbakkam
  • Retteri
  • Mudichur
  • Madambakkam
  • Sembakkam
  • Ayanambakkam
  • Velachery
  • Adambakkam
  • Puzhal
  • Kulathur

In this regard, CMDA is seeking design proposals from Architectural Design firms interested in participating in the Lakefront Reconnect Design Competition. An innovative approach will be required that capitalises on the unique location and natural features of each of the lakefronts. CMDA seeks a winning entry with an open, diverse and collaborative design that helps re-imagine the urban lake front. We look forward to finding strategic designs with inventive and forward thinking solutions that create genuine synergy between people, place and water.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The design competition is open to all Architectural firms with practice experience of minimum of 5 years and annual turnover of Rs.50 lakhs. Multidisciplinary teams may participate provided at least one qualified Architect, Landscape Architect, Civil Engineer is part of the team. Professionals of any other discipline can also be part of the team.
  • Applying (international/national) firms must have an office in India or should have a local partner from Tamil Nadu.
  • Should not be blacklisted by any government organisation.
  • Any team can send a maximum ofone entry per Lake.
  • The competition is not open to students.
  • The following individuals shall not be allowed to participate in the competition: CMDA employees (Permanent or Non-Permanent), jury members, technical committee.
